Best finds: Glass Vaults free EP download (Sonorous Circle) and Public Guilt free sampler (thanks Daniel). Nice review of Glass Vaults EP here on Cyclic Defrost and here on Einstein Music Journal. I haven't seen them live, but I hear they are great. They'll be supporting Xiu Xiu on their tour here in NZ.

Sorry - split into two parts due to some unknown tech glitch. Don't you hate those?

Could not decide what mood I was in tonight while getting this playlist sorted. I hope it works. Mostly dark, and kinda dirty, but there are some light moments too. New best find: Best Coast. Seems like lo-fi is the new black.

Had a whole day at a day spa today! What a treat. I had some very interesting makeup though. The final "treat" was getting my makeup done, but I got home and saw it properly and removed it. Oh my god, what did that girl think she was doing? It was pretty scary. However, the rest of the day was fun. I now have dark green fingernails and bright red toenails.

We have a friend staying who has lots of new music to listen to. Wish i could take a week off work and catch up on some listening. One more reason to work for myself again: listen to whatever the fuck I feel like.

In keeping with current times, how about some repeats.

I thought it might be time to revisit the first show I did back in Feb of 2009. Radi023 was in its infancy and we hadn't officially launched. None of the first 7 shows were even podcast.

Back then, I was playing solely New Zealand music which made for some interesting mixes.

I am still a very big fan of Swung. Please make some more music, Swung. It's wonderful, this stuff, and just leaves me wanting more.

Pop goes the (indie) weasel

Well, a girl can't listen to experimental all the time. Here's some new poppy tunes. Sometimes it's just what I'm in the mood for. Especially at the moment. I have a stinking cold and it's so busy at work that I can't take a sick day. So some nice pop music in the office gets the day off to a snapping pace. That, and some good cough mixture, and my day is not so bad.

Some pop I can't abide, but give me some shimmering dreampop and something with a krautrock twist and you'll have me twittering and shimmying round the office.

Warning: this mix starts out the least poppy and by the end of it we have some very poppy electro. Be warned. You may want to dance. Don't be put off by the inclusion of Robyn. Personally, I adore her Swedish cuteness that also packs a dirty punch.

Favourite from this mix though, is Florida's Surfer Blood. So much fun.

It's likely this is going to be podcast to the wonderful Foxy Digitalis, so it's a dual-purpose show this week.

Mostly low-fi, mostly new(ish) with a splash of old NZ tracks for good measure. My fave has got to be the delicious White Hinterland from Portland, Oregon. Just recently discovered them and am enjoying their poppy other-worldly tunes. When I say mostly low-fi, well, this is one that isn't.

Portland is well represented in this mix I've just realised, with Grouper and Bugskull also included. I'm going to visit Portland in about a year's time. There, it's on record now, so I have to do it! Lot's of people to visit, that's for sure.

Some upbeat shimmering electro tracks this week - some of them you might even be able to dance to in a kind of way. Well, I'll be doing a wee dance because my friend Ms LaQuisha Redfern is coming over in her kimono and I'm going to put on my new kaftan (Trade Me sucks me in) and we might even put on some sparkly makeup. I'm back after a few months break from the show. I have not been able to listen to anything jangly or loud or abrupt since my dad's death. So here are some songs to mark my Dad's passing. The kind of songs that are helping me to get through and come out the other side.

The first two songs were amongst those we chose for Dad's funeral service.

(Some are a little tongue-in-cheek towards the end, cos you have to keep a sense of humour.)

My dad was a big reader of my blog. I found out that once, when I had taken a break from blogging, he had downloaded my entire blog because he thought it was going to be deleted from the web. I never knew he was that interested in our lives. I've found out since that this was not true. His friends told us how much he talked of us. How proud he was.

Red Steers EP - The Fever Fold

Upcoming release from A Low Hum label by Red Steers - The Fever Fold.

A five-track nicely produced EP of sweet quirky electro pop. Red Steers is Wellington’s Daniel Johnston. Great voice. Jaunty tunes. Each one totally enjoyable.

If I had to compare this to anything, I'd say you could slot it alongside Animal Collective. There are some gorgeous almost choral moments.

Definite pop hit is Nighthawke, but my favourite is Home.

It's the loveliest time of year at the moment - the mellow warm autumn days. The light seems less harsh and the warmth in the sun is not as intense. Leaves are starting to brown, the fruiting trees and vines are squeezing out the last of their crops. The evenings have a faint chill. This is my time of year. I'm not a summer person. I like the sun, but I don't like the sticky heat. The music for this mellow time is my favourite: psychy, folksy dirges and drones. Mumbling strange lyrics. Anyone would think I was a drugged-out hippy. Nah. Not my style. Perhaps in a past life. Heh.

First track up is by Gong - this is one from my childhood. I remember being interested in the funny drawings and hippy garb and the titles of songs like "Squeezing Sponges Over Policeman's Heads" from the album Camembert Electrique. It was good to have older brothers who brought lots of different music into the house. I wonder what I would be listening to now if it hadn't been for the good early influences from my two big brothers. Thank you Greg and Steve.

Isis came here in February - yet another band I have missed and I'm getting pretty annoyed with not having any money to get along to gigs. Perhaps I should see if I can start writing reviews so I can get tickets. Hmm, that would mean finding time to do such things, but perhaps something to think about. Am I a good enough writer? I guess that could be a stumbling block... I've stopped looking at what gigs are coming up. It's getting too depressing.

Sad to see that Matthew Crawley and Jim Rush, aka Strange News and Galesburg, have gone into retirement. Sounds like numbers at gigs were not high enough to keep them going financially. A damn shame because they organised for some pretty amazing people to grace our shores. Perhaps too many so that people were picking and choosing what to go to. Also perhaps a sign of the times of recession.

This week's theme became apparent after choosing my first 3 songs. Seems I have low-fi on my mind. And back to some good New Zealand music which is fitting cos that's where this radio show began. Mixed in are a few songs from the rest of the world, but the core is most definitely Noo Zild.

I've been having dark dreams.

I had a original playlist list night that was very sombre and dark (along the doom metal line), but after listening to it I had some disturbing occult dreams and decided to ditch it and start again. The result is a little on the melancholic side, but it works for me.

Second week back at work and this one is easier than last week. I think my brain started to engage again today and I feel as though I am beginning to achieve something. On that note, how about some electro-tinged tunes. From downright poppy à la Simian Mobile Disco to the droning goodness Oneohtrix Point Never (wow!) - there's a little something for everyone. The Selfish Rose Show (a.k.a. songs that have shaped me)

Nostalgia: A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.

I decided a while ago to put together a show just for me - totally and alienatingly self-indulgent. All the songs that have shaped my musical tastes from about the age of 10 through to now. I still love all of these songs. First came the influence of my mother. Then the little transistor radio I got for Christmas that I would listen to in bed, hiding it under my pillow, tuned in to Casey Casum top 40. Then the music my big brothers brought into the house. And visiting my older cousins who had a gramophone (we didn't have one when I was young - just the radio). They had all the latest singles which we would play over and over. Then when I hit my teens I ventured out and found what I liked.

I can listen to all these tracks and think about the period of my life that they punctuated. In the days of vinyl (once we finally got a stereo - I can remember it being unpacked and I can remember the first album we had - Jade Warrior), it was so exciting when a new album arrived in the household. I'd pore over every inch of the sleeve, reading all the liner notes, and if it was gatefold it was even more thrilling. Favourite tracks would get played over and over. The needle would get shifted back again and again as I pressed my ear to the speaker trying to decipher all the lyrics which I would write into my notebook. Getting to know a new album was such an experience. Getting sick of one by playing it too too often was saddening.

Choosing just 2 hours of songs I love was really really hard. I haven't included much recent stuff. There were just too many old favourites. I guess I'll just have to do this again if people can stand it!

It's Session 45 and I'm 45, so there you go. There is my lame reasoning for being a selfish bitch. Ha!

Me and Dave are heading off on a short camping holiday in two days and I'm feeling pretty buzzy about it. It's the only time I can truly relax. No distracting domestic duties (I'm not very good at keeping still and doing nought). Just reading, sleeping, eating and drinking (and the occasional perambulation). We go to camping sites with the least facilities - the one we are going to has only drop toilets and no tap water. The logic being, the less the facilities, the less the crowds. We are just crossing our fingers there are no local bogans choosing this spot for their New Year's parties.

So the music this week fits my buoyant mood. Happy. Kinda silly in parts. Kinda whimsical in others.

It's nearly Christmas and I'm finding it a bit tense - lots to organise. My favourite kind of Christmas is one that is completely laid back and relaxed but I never seem to be able to manage that cos I'm a mother and an organiser and I sometimes wish I wasn't. Well, I don't wish I didn't have my amazing kids, but sometimes I wish I could be the one to kick back and enjoy someone else doing all the shit that is involved with making a nice day for everyone. Anyway, I've formed an escape hatch for Wednesday night with dreamscapes and drones to disappear into for a couple of hours. I hope it can be enjoyed in the same way by others. Tonight is a 2-hour special of music by Seht. Seht is Stephen Clover. I know Stephen as a friend, but that's not why I'm doing a special of his music. For me, Seht is the music I can listen to no matter what my mood. There are so many levels to Seht. One moment, warm, gentle and organic, the next mechanical, malevolent and dark. But never suddenly. Seht's tracks move seamlessly in a droney haze. Not to say there are not juxtapostions. It's just that dark can sit comfortably next to light. They can seem to be one and the same thing. Tonight I finally found the thread to Seht's music. I found the drone of the machine always sitting somewhere in the outer reaches of the most organic, acoustic track. A pervasive, yet background, hum.

I've sometimes thought of Seht's music as quite filmic and recently saw some films by Kim Pieters with Seht as the soundtrack. Worked beautifully and I found it quite emotionally moving to watch these dark slow images against the dark slow drones. What a match.

I've chosen a good range of tracks although I found it hard stripping some out of my original playlist. The ones I had to trim were the long ones. I could only fit one long track in. I couldn't really do him justice without one long track in my playlist.

Stephen Clover also runs a small label, Palindrone. He is an artist as well a musician. He loves cats. He makes a fine martini.

I've veered away from my original intent to play experimental, and this playlist brings me back on track. Two labels predominate on tonight's playlist: Music Your Mind Will Love You (MYMWLY) (from Australia under Michael Donnelly) and Digitalis (from the US under Brad Rose). There's a nice article here on Cyclic Defrost that talks about both labels.

Highlight for me is Liz Maw with 'sedated panic stations'. It was produced in my lounge. Liz will be playing in Wellington with Evil Ocean on December 19 at Mighty Mighty for their CD release. I'll be playing some tracks from their CD in the very near future.

I'm also enamoured with the two Blue Sabbath Black Fiji tracks at the end. Their sludgy electro-squawks are both rhythmic and droney at once with skronky medicated layerings that make me feel all funny in the brain department, especially with headphones on. So. Dave, my partner, has been hassling me about doing a collaborative show on At Home With Rose. The problem here was when I asked him what he would play, I received the predictable answer "The Fall". Hmmm, I thought, what the hell can I put up against The Fall? And then I had it. Cilla Black. I grew up listening to Cilla. I always loved the English girls: Sandy Shaw, Petula Clark, Lulu... But Cilla had the most powerful voice that completely gives me the shivers. Her voice is great for those angsty songs of love gone wrong (my favourite kind of love songs - stick those saccharine bloody happy ones). I always look out for old Cilla LPs at local fairs. I guess she's been my dirty music secret. But no longer! I declare - I LOVE CILLA BLACK.

Pop meets Experimental and says hello I like you very much

Most of the "poppier" music I like has an experimental bent. And some of the experimental I like has pop overtones. There's some specific crossovers with the likes of New Weird America (Animal Collective and the like) and some IDM. Then there's the 80s when some disco veered outside the mainstream. I've chucked in some low-fi that has lovely pop structures. It's a mixed bag, and you certainly wouldn't consider it all pop (not by a long shot) but there's a pop thread running through all of these tracks.

Sorry Chris Knox, but you wrote really lovely pop tunes, even though they were dark ones. Short, structured and catchy.

Yes, you read it right, this is "bedtime" music. Well, my kind of bedtime music. The kind I would choose for a romantic interlude. Put it to good use, people.

Anyways, here's the playlist. I found out while doing this that Labradford released their first album on on Flying Nun (after it was first released on Kranky). That's news to me. And that John White's Mogwash is now out under Last Visible Dog. When I got mine it was a CDR. Glad to see it has made it out into the big wide world. It's a very sweet album.

There are a couple of field recordings chucked in there too. I got them off www.freesound.org, a website full of wondrous sounds. I'm pretty keen on field recordings. Went to hear Chris Watson (ex-Cabaret Voltaire) at the Adam Art Gallery on Saturday and listened to his majestic half hour of field recordings from Iceland. Thrilling.

Bit of a change of routine for the show this week - I've asked my friend Michael along to co-host the show. I gave him the genre: psych folk (or just psych) and we get an hour each. We weren't allowed to divulge our list and if there were any double-ups, well so be it. But there weren't. Looking forward to sharing the show. Might be the start of some other collaborations for the show.

I realised I've ended up playing a few of the artists I've been playing lately anyways. Boring of me, but hey, I've been enjoying my pysch-folk shit lately. Next week, however, will be quite different when I play all synth tracks!

Just a note about one of the labels from tonight's show: Music Your Mind Will Love You (MYMWLY) - Autumn Galaxy is the artist I am playing who is on MYMWLY.

MYMWLY was an Australian independent label run by Mike Donnelly (of Terracid [plays on tonight's show], 6majik9, Soarwhole, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, etc.). All releases were recorded on CDRs and the copies are very limited. The label just closed shop at the beginning of this year, but I think there may still be some back catalogue stuff available via the MYMWLY blog.

However, Mike has just started another label, Pacific Soma. Apparently the rebranded label will be releasing both the old format CD-Rs as well as CDs and LPs. I'll be watching closely!

Not much to say about my week except that my sore shoulder and neck are getting better after a trip to my acupuncturist and my osteopath and a day at home watching movies. An expensive week.

It's all sweetness and light tonight. Well, with some dark bits of course, because with me there will always be a few dark moments. Just to set off the lighter moments, of course.

Note two tracks by Russian group Stuk Bambuka V 11 Chasov (rus. “Bamboo knocks at 11 o’clock”), from the album “Legkoe Delo Holod” (rus. “Cold is a soft thing”) which came out in 1991. The most information I could find out about them was here. My Russian friend introduced me to them and I must say, they are pretty fantastic. All images in the posting are Stuk Bambuka V 11 Chasov's album artwork.

So what's been happening lately? Well, Dave has been up at the Adam Art Gallery installing his part of the Wall Works show which is the tenth anniversary of the gallery. He's been having fun, and I haven't seen much of him in the last few nights because he's been gadding about, including tonight. Where's my cup of tea! Oh fuck, I had to get it myself. What a bore.

Anyway, the show is open already, as the installations happen. Everything will be finished by the end of the week and then there's going to be a fun party to celebrate the anniversary. Should be lots of fun. There'll be music too - Bek Coogan and Torben Tilly (normally performing as Full Fucking Moon). All the better. Apparently VBC, the student radio station, are broadcasting the event.

Other than that, we have not been up to much. I've been suffering from a sore shoulder and neck, so early nights have been a must. Groan groan. God, I'm getting old! My body is starting to crap out. It's all very depressing.

For starters, I have changed my show to Wednesday nights to work around my Film Society commitments. I haven't been able to get to a meeting now for months and it seems pointless being on the committee if I can't get to meetings. So Wednesday nights now I'll be in my room with my laptop and headphones loading the music up onto the interweb.

I've been getting into a bit of Finnish music lately. I'm sure there is more than just the Fonal label, but that is what I have discovered so far. I'm looking forward to hearing more.

Music for a cranky head

I'm in a crotchety mood. I'm reasonably sure it's work that has brought this on. Too much work, not enough staff. I think that some employers have taken advantage of the recession by getting rid of people and expecting everyone else to take up the slack. The public sector do this by way of constant restructuring. And now small industries can do it by just chucking people out and saying that it's because of hard financial times for the business (of course, sometimes it is, but I'm not going to be the devil's advocate here). And everyone is working their arses off because they don't want to lose their jobs. I'm getting pretty fucking sick of it. It's stressful and I'm not sleeping well. I feel I'm being taken advantage of - probably because I am.

I think this is reflected in my music choices for this show. Rather than calming, I seem to have chosen some glitchy stuff that gets under your skin. You'd think I'd be looking for stuff to chill myself out, but I guess I'm just a contrary woman.

Anyway – less about me, more about the music.

There are a few tracks from a really nice compilation called Frannce, out under RuralFaune. Here's a piece by Brad Rose on Foxy Digitalis about the label. There's also a review of Frannce on Foxy.

Compilations are one of my favourite ways to find new music. Say you like an artist - check out if they are on any compilations and chances are there'll be something else on there you like. Think of them like a curatorial process. Of course, it might just be a label promo and the songs might not sit together well, but often they are lovely things with some interesting concepts. Take Grains: A Compilation of 99 short tracks, out under Dot Dot Dot Music. Most of the tracks are under 1 minute - like a short short story. The song has to play out is such a short time, but a lot can happen in these tracks in 1 minute. I really like this compilation.

Guitars play my heartstrings

My mum used to have an Andrès Segovia record that was always one of my favourites. The sound of an acoustic guitar has always had a way of making me feel great. There's the link of home - my bro strumming on his guitar on a sunny morning was always a relaxing background sound. We had a boarder staying at our house when I was young who was a classical guitarist and used to practice (which made my mother swoon). I wasn't planning on any kind of theme to Session 27, but I notice there is one - acoustic guitar seems to thread it's way through the tracks, and that works for me.

Of particular note is the glorious fourteen-and-a-half minute track by Jack Rose (of Pelt).

I have to also mention an online friend, Eduardo Padilla, who runs Umor-Rex Records in Mexico. He has two of his own musical projects: Molloy And His Bike (his experimental folk) and Ping Pong Parrot (his digitally produced tracks). Umor-Rex is a wonderful net label where you can download albums by the artists they represent - for free - complete with artwork you can cut up as covers for the CDs if you care to burn them. It's all about the music. Eduardo is pretty busy with another label, too, Dog Eared Records.

Of course, I had to end with some Andrès Segovia. Just for me dear old mum.

One last thing I want to say - no more New Zealand only shows. I had far too good a time last week mixing it up.

Firstly, this pic is a piece I just exhibited at Thermostat Gallery's annual group show, Vent. It's called 'Now Hear The Word Of The Lord'. It sold at the show, which makes me pretty happy and very encouraged to keep on with making art.

Honey gets stuck in my ears

I've just had a week off work so I could get along to as many films as possible at the Film Festival. I haven't tallied up the amount of films I got along to in the past two weeks but I think it's getting up towards 40. It put me in a really great mood. Brain food I guess. I sure as fuck didn't want to go back to work today, so I've cheered myself up with some tunes I really like. There's a wee bit of poppy sweetness going on at the beginning, but the honey is interspersed with a bit of gorse here and there for good measure. Prickles in the honey. But mostly honey I reckon.

I'm going through a massive Alastair Galbraith phase at the moment. Can't get enough. I love his faltering New Zealand voice and his lyrics make me smile.

In other news, I have a piece in the annual group show, Vent, at Thermostat Gallery in Palmerston North. I'm going up there this weekend to see the show and take some pics so I'll stick a pic up on the blog next week. I couldn't make it for the opening, unfortunately.

Back to the film fest - the two best films I saw were Lars von Trier's Antichrist (which I only saw last night and so am still mentally digesting) and Dogtooth. Up there as well were We Live in Public, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Bluebeard, and Enjoy Poverty.

I have very little time to get my show sorted for tomorrow night. I was pondering this on the walk back to my car after seeing three Festival films back to back (the reason for my lack of planning time!) . I happened to be listening to podcast tracks I had subscribed to off the Audio Foundation website and thought what a great idea it would be to do an Audio Foundation show and give them a plug. They play a very important role in the NZ sound art scene.

In a nutshell, the Audio Foundation supports and promotes New Zealand audio projects. I find the Foundation an essential resource for my music show. The AF mailing list is active on an almost daily basis with the sharing of information on all facets of sound art in New Zealand.

The AF mailing list is just one of the Foundation's initiatives. They also organise sound art events as Alt Music (with funding from Creative New Zealand). They run an MP3 library (just in Auckland, as far as I know. They recently released a great compilation, Dirt Beneath the Daydream, which accompanied Wire magazine. The CD featured 21 tracks selected from an open call for submissions of previously unreleased experimental music from New Zealand.

I think we are really lucky in New Zealand to have this amazing resource. It's a collaborative community effort, but massive thanks and credit obviously go to Zoe Drayton who was instrumental in setting up the Foundation back in 2004.

One more thing - BUY MUSIC! Keep our artists fed! Downloading is good for a taster, but support our local artists by paying for their music.

Hammer me with your noise machine

Spend some time with noise and drone, and music (or anything else, for that matter) will never be the same again. It'll dismantle your hearing and put it back together in a completely different way.

I've compiled a range of noise tracks here. Probably the least noise-like is The Stumps - there's some instrumentation in here and some discernible melody. But they fit.

You'll see plenty of Dsic. He is the master of blippy white-noise noise. I've probably chosen the least harsh of his tracks really. He's an ex-Wellingtonian, moved to the Bristol, UK. I've asked him, and he still definitely considers himself a NZer. Check out his site.

I'm excited because I've just bought my tickets for the Film Festival. I'm taking a week off so will be going lots of daytime screenings. I love going to the movies during the day when everyone else is at work. It seems the most decadent way to spend your time.

The theme tonight is field recordings. I like listening to these with my headphones walking down the street. Quite a surreal experience - like being in two places at once.

Witching Hour – Field Recordings of Nighttime is on Tim Coster's label, CLaudia. Definitely worth checking out.

Travelogue 5454 was a CDR I picked up at a gig one night. Released under Artless Intent. Field recordings while travelling in Greece. 5454 is on myspace.

Stanier Black-Five creates amazing pieces from field recordings of trains.

The rest of the show is a lovely 60 minute piece from Seht.

I think field recordings are great to listen to as an "opening your ears" exercise. They're also very soothing. I lived in a flat once where my room was in the middle of the building with no windows (sounds grim but it was a massive room and kinda cool). Anyway, I never used to hear the weather so I used to borrow this lovely album off my flatmate of recordings of the countryside. On one side is a gentle rainy day in the paddocks complete with sheep, and on the other is a full-on storm with thunder and pelting rain and wind. There was nothing better as a soporific. Put me off to sleep with a smile on my face.

I think my fave track is the one of Phil Dadson's - essentially 15 minutes of snoring.

It's so cold. So very cold. In summer I yearn for winter. I can't stand the heat. But what I would do right now for a warm sunny day. I keep needing to shower before bedtime just to warm up. I wish I could find the electric blanket plugs... They are hidden away somewhere after last winter.

I saw a neat movie last week: A Handful of Dust, based on an Evelyn Waugh novel. Depressing, just how I like my movies. Thoroughly recommended. I also watched the latest Hal Hartley, Fay Grim, which I didn't think was so good. Okay, but not great. Parker Posey was super cute though. She had the most fabulous black coat.

I'm extremely excited about Where The Wild Things Are, based on the Maurice Sendak children's book. The film opens here in NZ on December 3. The trailer is best viewed on the Warner Bros website, not on YouTube where it doesn't look nearly as sharp. I read ages ago that Dave Eggers has written the screenplay, so that makes me even keener to see it. Directed by Spike Jonze.

Another thing I saw this week was a very very cool 15-minute short film, I Love You More, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, more well known for her work in the gallery. I saw it on a DVD magazine put out by McSweeney's - Wholphin - to which I subscribe. It was based on a short story by Patrick Marber, called "Pete Shelley", and it kicked arse. I really loved it. I didn't know it was by Taylor-Wood till afterwards and I was kind've shocked cos I don't really like her art all that much. I'll be interested to see what she does from here in the film world. A feature? I hope so. I want to read that short story now. I have a feeling I'll like that rather a lot.

And so on to the music. This week is another reasonably unthemed bunch. I usually start out with the low-fi easier songs and then on to some drone and noise, but I've flipped that round a wee bit this time.

One band to mention is Full Fucking Moon - Bek Coogan (Cortina) has teamed up with Torben Tilly (The Garbage and the Flowers, Minit, Bad Statistics). A friend dropped the CDR in to us and it's very nice. I really like Coogan's voice in the track I've chosen - kind of chanty and doesn't overshadow the instruments.

Holiday for me

There won't be a live show for the next two weeks. Tomorrow night I have an important meeting for Wellington Film Society (I'm on the committee). And next week (hurrah!) I'm off for a holiday to celebrate my birthday. I need a little break, so Dave and I are off to spend two nights in a little cottage in the Wairarapa. Main draw is a big old clawfoot bath and an open fireplace. Gonna be nice. Hopefully, Jeff at Radio23 is gonna be able to replay one of my old shows.

Sounding kinda proggy and slightly psych this week. And sometimes a little saccharine. Ah well. I'm still feeling a bit crappy from my cold which is nearly gone and I'm not much in the mood for noise this week.

I've included are a couple of tracks from debut album, Circa Scaria, by An Emerald City. The album was recorded in a big cave over two days. How cool is that? I definitely slot this album in the prog section. And hey! - that's not necessarily a bad thing. I was weaned on Emerson Lake and Palmer and Genesis, man! It's in my fricking blood, okay? Apparently the An Emerald City have moved to Berlin. Their debut gets some bad reviews, and it gets some good reviews.

I've been a bit sick with a headcold for the last few days. I only get a cold about once every couple of years, so when it hits me I feel pretty miserable. I spent almost the whole day yesterday in bed watching movies. Was kinda nice. Lemon and honey drinks and cups of tea. Plenty of snoozing off, too.

Being sick has left me with little time to get my show ready, but I seem to be getting quicker anyway. I usually get the tracks picked out on a Sunday evening and then the fine tuning and the playlist get done on Monday night. This time I've finished the whole shebang tonight, being Monday night. I'm not going to dilly-dally around telling you about the artists, cos I really need my kip, being sick and all.

I will say that I am playing a track by Stanier Black-Five (who has the best name I've bloody heard of for a while!) who I saw play at the Adam Art Gallery on Thursday night and she's pretty great. She's based in Christchurch, but originally from the UK. She runs her own label, Argot Records.

Bailter Space vs The Skeptics

One hour of Bailter Space followed by one hour of The Skeptics.

It's not noise. It's not drone. But listen and you'll hear the influence both these bands have had on the New Zealand alternative and experimental music scene.

Two amazing and influential New Zealand bands: one still hanging in there in New York and the other sadly short-lived due to the death of singer David D'Ath in 1990.

Both of these bands were outstanding live. I was lucky enough to see The Skeptics play in Timaru many years ago - I think it was about 1984. I didn't know much about them at the time. The small unsophisticated crowd soon turned into a clutch of quietly enthralled people. My jaw dropped. I've been in love with them since. Their songs are surprising. They weren't like anything else that was around at the time. Yes, you can hear the punk coming through, and some influence from the Dunedin sound, but they also had a dark gothic bent. There's even an occasional smattering of reggae beats. They were The Skeptics. And they were pretty fucking incredible.

After The Skeptics disbanded, band members John Halversen and Brent McLaughlan went on to join Bailter Space.

I've seen Bailter Space probably about five times live - two of those times were in the space of a week. They built huge sonic walls – I remember the time my black dress was banging against my legs with the force of the bass (I think my noise-induced hearing loss was partially caused by being too close to the speakers at Bailter Space concerts). These guys were truly loud. But they had an underlying sonic drone and soaring guitars and distorted feedback that are there in lots of the music I love. Really dreamy and shoe-gazer but also with huge sonic strength. Loud and soft all at the same time. Stuff to swoon to. Well, I do.

I've been known to go to sleep at night listening to Bailter Space's Tanker on many occasions...

Lolly scramble tonight. Couldn't be arsed with a theme, so just some bits and pieces that I like.

First up is a 40-minute turn-up-your-stereo-and-blast-your-neighbours live recording, "Dread the Future", by Neoteric Sound Research Unit No. 0001. Fun and games. From magical to ferocious.

We move from there into lo-fi land puncutated by some nice field recordings from Greece by 5454. Thanks to David Coventry for sending me some tracks - included this week is a guitar piece by him. I love it when people send me stuff!

I've recently been introduced to David Watson, an ex-pat New Zealander living in New York. Thanks to the Fungus boys for pointing me in his direction. I'm very happy about that! David has worked with the likes of John Zorn and Lee Renaldo. According to Wikipedia, he helped start the alt.music festivals in 2001. He makes experimental bagpipe music! Yay for that, I say. I'm a fan of the bagpipes.

I've included some Douglas Lilburn to finish with. I kind of forget about his amazing music. He was the grand-daddy of electro-acoustic in New Zealand.

The Aesthetics

Last night we went to see The Aesthetics at The Adelaide. It was lots of fun. I drank way too much beer. I enjoyed seeing Matt Middeleton play live as Crude. He's pretty entertaining. I hated the saxophone though. I really really hate noodly sax playing. It's just a thing of mine. It doesn't matter how much people improvise and how much they experiment. It still sounds like a sax. Must have been too much Kenny Gee on the radio in the 80s or something. Anyways, there were a couple of girls who played some really great garagey rock who go by the name of Newtown. They were lots of fun. Lots of power and plenty of balls. I thought they were pretty neat. Nice growly vocals. And yelling not screaming. Zombie Fuck were up next, and they sound good till the screeching vocals start. I wasn't big on that. I don't think I want to see them again. I've seen them once before at Happy and was not keen then either. Well there ya go. You can't like everything. Sorry if you read this, Zombie Fuck. I'm sure you've got your followers.

The Aesthetics were just great. Lots of energy, plenty of people up dancing. Matt Middleton has heaps of mad energy on the stage.

Here's what they have to say about themselves on their website: "Our mission : to keep the moronic in vogue, in focus. To apply our kollective learnings to the infantile and primitive ritual/release that is punk rock, to render the stupid the highest peak of aesthetic life, of life itself. Floyd the Phenomenal Cat Trophy

I wanna plug this guy. Floyd the Phenomenal Cat Trophy. I found him somehow or other on MySpace and ordered his CD (a data disk actually, of three albums of phenomenally wonderful lo-fi tracks in three handy bit-rates!). His voice is reminiscent of Peter Murphy's of Bauhaus, or even Paul Banks of Interpol. Deep and powerful. He can sing along sweetly, then suddenly roar in a powerful bass growl. Fuck, I love it. His songs are interesting. They have that feeling of Daniel Johnsonesque intimacy. With song titles like "things my robot said in a song for Bedt" and "summer as a fuckface" you know you're gonna want to listen hard and hear his lyrics. The instrumentation is pretty standard but nicely done. Drums, some organ drone, strumming guitar - nothing fancy. But that voice. He's phenomenal alright. Someone sign him! If I had a label, I would.

Greg Malcolm at Enjoy Gallery

Tonight we went to the White Fungus Relocation Party (Ron and Mark are off to Taiwan and publishing White Fungus from there). As part of the celebrations, Greg Malcolm made his way up from Christchurch for a one-off performance. I've seen Greg play twice before and really enjoyed his music and his warm-humoured delivery. There's a real playfulness with Greg's music, and none of the serious earnestness that can be kinda annoying with sound artists. It's pretty obvious that he spends a lot of time experimenting with sound. He brings out so many odd items to connect to his guitar in some way (dangling off it, rubbed against it, banging directly onto it) you wonder what he's gonna pull out next. While he strums sweet melodies on his guitar (an amazingly beautiful instrument) his toes are used on two guitars laid flat on the ground in front of him. It's great to watch. I loved it when he laid a marble on the strings of one of the prostate guitars and tipped it gently back and forth, resulting in a sliding drone.

The only downer of the night were the many people creating an irritating drone of their own. I do wonder why people come to performances when all they want to do is chat to their friends. It shows little respect for the artist. We noticed that Greg pumped the volume up quite suddenly at one stage and I picked up a tiny lift of a smile as he did so. Quite right, Greg. But he shouldn't have had to do that.

Because of the perfomance tonight, I've decided that my next show is going to be a Greg Malcolm special. I love his stuff. He's been included on my playlist before. I've been thinking about having single artist shows, so this is the first of those. I'm looking forward to putting it together tomorrow night.

Yes, this week is the time for guitars and drums. Noise-as-rock/rock-as-noise. Some of it's borderline. Some of it you might call drone. But to me, there's a hint of rock in all these tracks. More testosterone than you can shake a stick at.

It's my pleasure to be involved with the wonderful Radio23, which just launched officially on April 23. I've been listening to shows by the other DJs and I've gotta give a plug for I Will Not Return Your Records, hosted by the lovely Lorrie in Montreal. It's become my favourite Friday afternoon kick. Nice way to end the week. Great playlists - country(ish), rock(ish), folk(ish). From Neil Young to Six Organs of Admittance, by a roundabout route.

Another show on Radio23 that I adore (it's magic) is PRAEMISSVM PLANTARIO. This show takes me on a trip. I can't listen to it at the office, so I download the podcasts and listen at my leisure. Lots of sonic layers and otherworldly mutterings.

Last week was folksy overtones - this week it's electronic. Sure, there may be an occasional barely recognisable guitar chord, but this show is essentially digital maelstrom. I tucked in a little sweet girlie thing at the end that does have some guitar and drums. I just felt it needed it at the end. More for myself than my listeners, cos I'm a selfish bitch at heart.

I want to acknowledge the phenomenon of Creative Commons and free audio here. Not that there is anything wrong with paying for music. Oh no!
