On eccentricty

Eccentricity has always abounded where and when strength of character has abounded: and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigour and moral courage it contained. That so few dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.

Yeah--people prefer to be conformist consumers than pursuing their own path.

There's more I want to say about this because some folks think I'm "eccentric" tho I don't aspire to be. But I do notice that I'm not a typical American.

That was bad writing--I'm very tired. What I meant to say was: people prefer to be conforming consumers rather than pursue their own path.

I think that true eccentrics don't aspire to be. They just are. Anyone who aspires to be is a poseur. So I guess you are not one of those :)

I seem to be attracted to people who exhibit some form of eccentricity. I don't think I'm an eccentric though, but I guess that would be for someone else to say.

True eccentrics don't know they are. I have relatives who are very eccentric, and if I were to tell them, they'd shrug and continue telling me their weird thoughts.

Based on what I observed with some family members' behavior, I asked a friend if I was eccentric, and he said, "That's why we like you." I was like, "What?! Why didn't anyone tell me?!" If I ask my husband, he smiles.

I'm not trying to be "different" but I guess I am, and if I were a teenager I'd be bummed, but at this point, who cares.

I'm not a weirdo/loser, btw, just being honest :)

Most of the men I end up with seem to have some form of eccentricity. And my friends do too. But me? Oh, I'm not sure. Perhaps I need to ask some people. Isn't that quote great? I'm planning to read some more of John Mill's writing now. When time permits.

Isn't it great that your friends cherish your eccentricities? The things that set us apart are the things that make us unique.
