SESSION 16: At Home With Rose

Two dollar mixture

>> DOWNLOAD HERE <<

Lolly scramble tonight. Couldn't be arsed with a theme, so just some bits and pieces that I like.

First up is a 40-minute turn-up-your-stereo-and-blast-your-neighbours live recording, "Dread the Future", by Neoteric Sound Research Unit No. 0001. Fun and games. From magical to ferocious.

We move from there into lo-fi land puncutated by some nice field recordings from Greece by 5454. Thanks to David Coventry for sending me some tracks - included this week is a guitar piece by him. I love it when people send me stuff!

I've recently been introduced to David Watson, an ex-pat New Zealander living in New York. Thanks to the Fungus boys for pointing me in his direction. I'm very happy about that! David has worked with the likes of John Zorn and Lee Renaldo. According to Wikipedia, he helped start the alt.music festivals in 2001. He makes experimental bagpipe music! Yay for that, I say. I'm a fan of the bagpipes.

I've included some Douglas Lilburn to finish with. I kind of forget about his amazing music. He was the grand-daddy of electro-acoustic in New Zealand.

Neoteric Sound Research Unit No. 0001

This week I'm going to be playing a live 40-minute recording by the new Wellington noise group Neoteric Sound Research Unit No. 0001. NSRUN 0001 are David Cauchi, Tribby Gonix, Laura Shepard, and Matt Whitwell. This is their first recording. Exciting!

neoteric Rare ~adj. 1. belonging to a new fashion or trend, modern: a neoteric genre. ~n. 2. a new writer or philosopher. [C16: via Late Latin from Greek neoterikos young, fresh, from neoteros younger, more recent, from neos new, recent] – neoterically adv.

The Aesthetics

Last night we went to see The Aesthetics at The Adelaide. It was lots of fun. I drank way too much beer. I enjoyed seeing Matt Middeleton play live as Crude. He's pretty entertaining. I hated the saxophone though. I really really hate noodly sax playing. It's just a thing of mine. It doesn't matter how much people improvise and how much they experiment. It still sounds like a sax. Must have been too much Kenny Gee on the radio in the 80s or something. Anyways, there were a couple of girls who played some really great garagey rock who go by the name of Newtown. They were lots of fun. Lots of power and plenty of balls. I thought they were pretty neat. Nice growly vocals. And yelling not screaming. Zombie Fuck were up next, and they sound good till the screeching vocals start. I wasn't big on that. I don't think I want to see them again. I've seen them once before at Happy and was not keen then either. Well there ya go. You can't like everything. Sorry if you read this, Zombie Fuck. I'm sure you've got your followers.

The Aesthetics were just great. Lots of energy, plenty of people up dancing. Matt Middleton has heaps of mad energy on the stage.

Here's what they have to say about themselves on their website: "Our mission : to keep the moronic in vogue, in focus. To apply our kollective learnings to the infantile and primitive ritual/release that is punk rock, to render the stupid the highest peak of aesthetic life, of life itself. To strip back the layers of self-deception and self-betrayal that is the everyday, the brattish hubub of late modern capitalism and , assisted by all types of poisons, brandish our musical weapons with ugly, stupid, turbulent simplicity. We , the Aesthetics : obviously boys, stupid men, drunk, in trance, yelping and stuffing down food offerings, pissing profits away, we activate a new, deep subconcious stream and , through our group ritual, keep new zealand on it's feet. For if these artists, these madmen, were to be denied their right to performance, the cancer that is 'straight' new zealand society would metastasize exponentally. 'Real men', all hair-product and credit, would wake up one gray morning, pick up a knife, and murder with android indifference. We keep this country on it's feet. We realize and heal these repressed subconcious collective evils bursting at the seams of the 'real world' through our music/ritual. All for no reward. Perhaps a strained, guilty half-smile from a city counsellor. WE ROCK. WE ROCK ON. WE ROCK ON . ONWARD - INTO OUR 30S. OUR 4OS."

It's a shame Pumice was on in the same night. I would have liked to have gone to that gig too. Always a bummer when they coincide.

Floyd the Phenomenal Cat Trophy

I wanna plug this guy. Floyd the Phenomenal Cat Trophy. I found him somehow or other on MySpace and ordered his CD (a data disk actually, of three albums of phenomenally wonderful lo-fi tracks in three handy bit-rates!). His voice is reminiscent of Peter Murphy's of Bauhaus, or even Paul Banks of Interpol. Deep and powerful. He can sing along sweetly, then suddenly roar in a powerful bass growl. Fuck, I love it. His songs are interesting. They have that feeling of Daniel Johnsonesque intimacy. With song titles like "things my robot said in a song for Bedt" and "summer as a fuckface" you know you're gonna want to listen hard and hear his lyrics. The instrumentation is pretty standard but nicely done. Drums, some organ drone, strumming guitar - nothing fancy. But that voice. He's phenomenal alright. Someone sign him! If I had a label, I would.

Greg Malcolm at Enjoy Gallery

Tonight we went to the White Fungus Relocation Party (Ron and Mark are off to Taiwan and publishing White Fungus from there). As part of the celebrations, Greg Malcolm made his way up from Christchurch for a one-off performance. I've seen Greg play twice before and really enjoyed his music and his warm-humoured delivery. There's a real playfulness with Greg's music, and none of the serious earnestness that can be kinda annoying with sound artists. It's pretty obvious that he spends a lot of time experimenting with sound. He brings out so many odd items to connect to his guitar in some way (dangling off it, rubbed against it, banging directly onto it) you wonder what he's gonna pull out next. While he strums sweet melodies on his guitar (an amazingly beautiful instrument) his toes are used on two guitars laid flat on the ground in front of him. It's great to watch. I loved it when he laid a marble on the strings of one of the prostate guitars and tipped it gently back and forth, resulting in a sliding drone.

The only downer of the night were the many people creating an irritating drone of their own. I do wonder why people come to performances when all they want to do is chat to their friends. It shows little respect for the artist. We noticed that Greg pumped the volume up quite suddenly at one stage and I picked up a tiny lift of a smile as he did so. Quite right, Greg. But he shouldn't have had to do that.

Because of the perfomance tonight, I've decided that my next show is going to be a Greg Malcolm special. I love his stuff. He's been included on my playlist before. I've been thinking about having single artist shows, so this is the first of those. I'm looking forward to putting it together tomorrow night.

SESSION 13: At Home With Rose

Raaaaawwwwwk.

>> DOWNLOAD PODCAST HERE <<

Yes, this week is the time for guitars and drums. Noise-as-rock/rock-as-noise. Some of it's borderline. Some of it you might call drone. But to me, there's a hint of rock in all these tracks. More testosterone than you can shake a stick at.

It's my pleasure to be involved with the wonderful Radio23, which just launched officially on April 23. I've been listening to shows by the other DJs and I've gotta give a plug for I Will Not Return Your Records, hosted by the lovely Lorrie in Montreal. It's become my favourite Friday afternoon kick. Nice way to end the week. Great playlists - country(ish), rock(ish), folk(ish). From Neil Young to Six Organs of Admittance, by a roundabout route.

Another show on Radio23 that I adore (it's magic) is PRAEMISSVM PLANTARIO. This show takes me on a trip. I can't listen to it at the office, so I download the podcasts and listen at my leisure. Lots of sonic layers and otherworldly mutterings.

And so, here is my playlist for this week:

Chris Heazlewood, International Smoker, Cash Guitar, Flying Nun. (4:23)
Sandoz Lab Technicians, Satan's Green Claw, Sandoz Lab Technicians, Siltbreeze. (3:51)

Radio 23 launch

Woohoo! From today Radio 23 is no longer in beta. Bioig launch party! Wish I was in Brroklyn for this. They'll be having fun. I'll be on the road to New Plymouth to see my mum and sister for the weekend, so I won't get to listen.

Anyway, I'll be thinking of Jeff in New York and wishing them all the best.

SESSION TWELVE: At Home With Rose

>> DOWNLOAD SESSION 12

Last week was folksy overtones - this week it's electronic. Sure, there may be an occasional barely recognisable guitar chord, but this show is essentially digital maelstrom. I tucked in a little sweet girlie thing at the end that does have some guitar and drums. I just felt it needed it at the end. More for myself than my listeners, cos I'm a selfish bitch at heart.

I want to acknowledge the phenomenon of Creative Commons and free audio here. Not that there is anything wrong with paying for music. Oh no! But there is a new online culture where artists make their music available for download. So here's a plug for the four artists whose free music I am playing in this session:

Kraus: one of his albums was described in The Listener as "somewhere between a pop Moog record and the harshest no wave." Kraus has the best website I have seen for a long time. Highlight: his interviews with himself. Oh, and his music. I think he's pretty fucking fantastic.
Dsic: Ex-pat New Zealander living in Bristol, UK.
Crude: Matt Middleton has been making music in Dunedin since 1994.
Disasteradio: Luke is Rowell is a Wellington artist who is influenced by Commodore 64 games. You can tell this just by looking at his website.

Here's the playlist for the show:

Golden Axe, Track 02, unknown, (1:26)
Disasteradio, Mail Order Computer Kit, Disasteradio, Open source audio. (2:52)
Kraus, Birds, Red, Green and Blue: 1998-2003, free audio. (4:10)

Kraus, Exterminating Angel, Red, Green and Blue: 1998-2003, free audio. (3:51)
Kraus, Light and You, Red, Green and Blue: 1998-2003, free audio. (2:47)

Those vikings love to fight and play...

Aussie music was big back in the early 80s - the height of my teens. Icehouse, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors, Mental as Anything, Midnight Oil. I've been reliving the beauty of these songs on YouTube and marvelling at the love of mop-hair, slap bass and horn sections. There were some very special songs. Remember the emotional draw of Hunter and Collector's "Throw Your Arms Around Me"?

Here's "Talking to a Stranger"

My favourite Mental As Anything song:

Blogging from bed

Reading: After Dark by Haruki Murakami

I've had a silly condition this week. On Thursday morning I had a major dizzy spell. I woke up, swivelled my head to look at the clock, and when I turned back I got the head-spins like you wouldn't believe. I closed my eyes and the room was spinning round. Immediate nausea - I felt like I was on a lurching boat. When I got up I had to hold on to the walls to make my way to the loo. Not pleasant. Anyways, I got a taxi to the doctor that morning and found out I had this thing called Benign Positional Vertigo. Apparently it is going to go away - takes 3 to 14 days to disappear. Bloody nuisance. I did some gardening and shopping yesterday and I think I overdid it a bit. This morning (Sunday) the whole room was whirling again so I have stayed in bed and have been dozing and reading. Decided to spend the time a little more usefully and listened to the podcast of Zoe Drayton, founder of the Audio Foundation being interviewed on National Radio. I found it interesting that she is so dismissive about her own music. I really rate her - she has only put out a small amount of music, but what she has done is so sublime, and really so different to what other people in the scene are doing. Her reason for not promoting herself is that others have been doing it for so much longer and she has only been making music for a short time. To me, that makes no difference. It's the end result that matters. Mind you, she mentioned that she was composing at the age of 10 and it sounds like she had some amazing influences as a child, being exposed to minimalist classical, folk, and jazz. She mentioned that her creative career was interrupted by having children in her 20's, and I can certainly relate to that. I feel I'm finding time now to find my own creative voice now that my child rearing days are over. Would have been nice to have been interspersed by some examples of the music she was describing though. So much time was spent trying to describe the genres and sub-genres - just bloody play some of it!

I've enjoyed reading my book. I haven't been doing enough reading lately. I really need to start getting to bed earlier. It's the only place I read and it's entirely reliant on me getting to bed early enough before I nod off and the book falls out of my hands.

SESSION NINE: At Home With Rose

Lazy lazy. Here's this weeks tracklist. I'll fill in the gaps later. Hope this is not the beginning of me slipping! No links as yet. If ever. Partly cobled together from my third show, but actually did a major overhaul once I listened to my third show and found it lacking.

First three tracks might make yr ears bleed slightly, but then the tracks further down the line will heal them and really, you'll be a better person for it. Truly. Trust me.

Crossing over

My son has moved out. The final kid to leave the nest. It's good and it's bad. It's the end of the biggest part of my life so far - child rearing. So that's sad. But it's the beginning of a whole new way of life - no kids in the house. No more "what's for dinner?", "where are my socks?" and "mum, can you turn your music down, it's 1 a.m.". Truly, the latter happened recently and I felt quite bad.

Anyway, the upshot of all this is that today we moved into my son's old room.I had given him the biggest bedroom because he was studying and needed the space. The room is really light with a bay window. It has a wardrobe! D and I have been sharing a tiny wardrobe only fit for one person. Luckily I don't have a lot of clothes. But now we have the luxury of a wardrobe, and heaps of cupboard space, plus lots of room to move around. My laptop is usually sitting on the dining room table, but tonight I'm preparing my show from my bed. It's luxury, I tell ya!

I'm taking the easy route with my show this week and using an earlier one. The main reason, though, is that my early shows were never archived, so I've decided to just play them again so that I can archive them for podcasting. I'm playing Session Three again this Tuesday night. Next time I'll play Session One again.

The Vegetable Markets

I went out to the vege markets in Lower Hutt this morning. It's so very much cheaper than getting your veg at the supermarket. Cheaper, fresher, and more variety. Plus, because there are so many producers there, you can shop around from stall to stall to get even better prices. I would say I would spend half or less on veg and fruit out there. Plus I can pick up organic eggs, fresh bread and hunt through old records and CDs too. But the thing I like about it most is that I feel like I'm in real New Zealand, not white-bread Wellington. In the midst of so many cultures, I can appreciate that we are part of the South Pacific, that we are a Pacific nation, not some little European outreach. Today I picked up some celeriac, fresh rice noodles, a big bag of limes, and some fennel bulbs, amongst lots of other stuff. There's always heaps of Asian herbs and veg that I wish I knew more about. Yes, it takes a whole Saturday morning to get out there, do my shopping, and get back, but I love the experience, and when I look at my fridge full of goodies it's a grand feeling.

Old photos

I've been looking through old photos on my computer. I had a gut-dropping moment when I thought I had deleted all my photos. Fortunately I was wrong. Amongst them are scans from a bunch of old slides. My dad always shot on transparency and a while ago my sister organised getting some of them digitised. I always get a bit teary looking at these old photos. Here's one of me when I was about 5 or 6, holding my favourite "Clowny" who I never cast off entirely till I was about 14.

SESSION EIGHT: At Home With Rose

It's only a month to go now until the launch of Radio23. All very exciting. Each time I go through the live webcast process I seem to do something wrong. I'm really hanging out for the day when it all goes off without a hitch. Perhaps this week will be the day! Of course, I'm not yet doing a live voice-over with my new mic. I don't have a room to broadcast from yet and there's always noise around, so it'll be cool soon when I have a dedicated spot in the house and I can blither away to my heart's content.

Here's my tracklist for Tuesday night. Links still to be added.

SESSION SEVEN: AT HOME WITH ROSE

Playlist for transmission: 17 March 2009 8-10 pm NZ time (midnight Pacific time)

Podcast: to Feedburner

I just saw Seht perform as part of a fantastic line-up at Happy in the weekend. Seht, then Pumice, then Grouper (Portland, OR). A great night. Seht played live remixes of his divine Christian Jesus, I Will Determine A Suicide which I have decided to play here in it's entirety. Why? Cos I can! Those first strands of sound that gradually billow out of the gloom floor me every time. I find Seht's music very filmic and visual. It conjures up looming entities from clouds of inky smoke. It's the music Brian Eno would make if he were a ghost.

Last week I had a really bad time with my show. The playlist and the podcast don't match up 'cos I had serious technical hitches. Never mind. Hopefully this show is going to go without a hitch. I sitll don't have mic-overs, but maybe next time. It's all coming together as I get my head round the technology and the necessary software. Learning new stuff is fun!

Also the time slot will help matters. Getting outta bed at 6.15am and into the technical aspects of the show by 6.45 are not conducive to a hitch-free session. Even though I do consider myself a morning person.

Shows are now podcast

Okay, I'm being lazy because I really need to put some permanent links in the sidebar, but just letting everyone know that my radio show is now being podcast here.

At Home With Rose timeslot change

Due to daylight saving in the US, I've decided to change my timeslot. It wasn't worth getting up at 4.15am. Not for anything. That is sleeping time. Especially when I have work that day.

The new time is Tuesday nights from 8 to 10pm, New Zealand time. I think that makes it around 3am in New York where the show uploads to.

SESSION SIX: AT HOME WITH ROSE

Pushing the genre out a bit with some lofi niceness.

I have discovered Autistic Daughters and I am in love. Sweet sweetness.

My fave track today is a new unreleased track from a demo sent to me by Stephen Clover (Seht) pictured. When I listen to it I feel like I'm in a David Lynch film. And that's a good thing.

SESSION FIVE: At Home With Rose

I've decided to stick to my noise/drone/lo-fi genre in the future. While Radio23 is still in Beta, I'll possibly do another couple of shows of indie/pop/folkish tunes, but it suits to keep to relative genres since the station will be splitting into various genre-based channels.

I've been addressing copyright issues and contacting artists where I can. If you are on my playlist and I haven't yet contacted you - I'm sorry. I do intend to make sure I receive permission from all artists. Gotta do the right thing!

Thanks to Andy McLeod for sending through a track at the last minute. Very very pleased to include new track from new Auckland sludgy metal fiends, Evil Ocean.

Finish with two tracks from one of my all-time favourite bands, The Skeptics. I saw them play in Timaru so many years ago. They opened my ears and my eyes.

SESSION TWO: At Home with Rose

It's my non-noise week for my radio show, so a mix of old and new of mixed genre. Okay, Ladyhawke is totally pop, but I love "Paris is Burning". I can't justify it – I just like it.

I'm hoping I can eventually play my show completely live without having to plan ahead, but for now I'm having to do it this way. Been a bit lazy with the links - might add some more in if I have time. I seem to be having a very busy week.

Included are three of my all-time favourite NZ songs - Tall Dwarf's "Nothing's Gonna Happen" (felt like my teenage theme song at the age of 15), The Chills' "Pink Frost" and "Down in Splendour" by Straightjacket Fits. I always did prefer Andrew Brough's voice to Shayne Carter's.

Humour at home

David called me a witch (I was trying very hard to annoy him at the time, and succeeding). Then he said “I think I offended a woman at work when I called her a witch [pause for effect]… I think she's a fundamentalist christian.”

SESSION ONE: At Home With Rose

As a preamble to my show tomorrow morning, I want to quote part of a review of PseudoArcana's compilation, The Tone of the Universe (= The Tone of the Earth) on Pitchfork:

“Drone is liturgy. Since its mid-century installation in the repertoire of experimental music, drone has been coded with naked aspirations: people looking to the holy East; people looking to the archaic; people looking into deep space, into the pure machine, into the stranger mind. Drone has always been enamored of the faraway. The sacred, as always, must be imported from there.

“Its devotees are few but fervent. But the faith has always seemed strangely incommunicable: It doesn't seem to get many converts, just initiates and infidels and no commerce between them. Missionary work is a slog. Those who have made stabs at evangelization know the response is usually incredulity rather than hostility. Minimalist classics have been returned to me with a blankness bordering on incomprehension, as if I'd handed out videotapes of television snow and demanded an assessment of character arcs.”

Drone is not to everyone’s taste - that's a given. When I first listened to drone and noise, I found I could only take it in bursts. Sometimes there was some that I just didn't “get” in the least. It's taken a while to get to the stage where I can happily listen to a couple of hours of back-to-back noise and drone. I think that what drone has done for me has helped me find the “music” in the everyday. The sound around us everywhere. The divine noise of life. Listen to the words used in the quote: liturgy, fervent, converts. I went to see the final performance of Birchville Cat Motel in Christchurch and there's such a hush, such a feeling of communion, that you could feel you were in a church. There’s a feeling of reverence at a noise gig. Noise and drone have opened up my aural appreciation, my aural senses. It's helped me to “listen” and it has a meditative quality. Pauline Oliveros uses a term “deep listening” that I rather like.

My playlist is (and will be every week) solely New Zealand. Every other week I'll be playing other NZ music – a mix of genres, but generally away from the mainstream. Radio23 is international, so I want to get some NZ music out there that I'd like people to hear.

I hope it all works according to plan because the station is still in Beta mode and this is a test run for me.

I'm doing a weekly radio show for Radio23 - live tomorrow morning from 7-9am NZ time - called At Home With Rose (of course). NZ noise-drone-ambient. Radio23 is still on test drive. Hope it all goes according to plan!

It's going to be a weekly show. Kinda exciting cos I've never done anything like this before.

I'll post the playlist here in the morning.
